The advantages of armor and how armor works is kinda obvious, So I will just say how to make a torso guard and thigh/leg Guards.

Cut a head and two arm holes in the bottom of one trash bag.
Cut up the middle of the Second trash bag by starting at the bottom and stopping eight to four inchs from the top
Cut off the bottom seam on the second bag.
Tape the cut that is in the middle of the second bag in a way such that you have two open sections leading off from the main top section.
